The syn.rip network runs on a custom version of ngIRCd. Some notable features of the network are:

  1. Tor and I2P support.
  2. No logs of any type are retained.
  3. No network channel list, or WHOIS channel list.
  4. No services like, NickServ, ChanServ, ETC.
  5. No channel operators. Actually, all channels are modeless.
  6. No max / current users listed.
  7. No WHOWAS history.
  8. Unique certificate fingerprints are no longer displayed.
  9. All users get the same vHost.
  10. Anarchy.

Agenda

The goal is to create an open place where censorship or user discrimination of any type, for any reason, is inherently impossible, while maintaining anonymity and privacy for each user. The admins voluntarily retain as little control over the network as possible in order to accomplish these goals, so yes, i believe that 'anarchy' is a fair way to describe the network. Assuming no one has gone rogue and crazy, the admins cannot see who is connected to the network, what channels exist, messages being sent, etc. There are multiple servers at any given time, 2 peers run on our own hardware in seperate locations, and we rent one VPS server for a clearnet mirror.

Clients

Some sane clients to consider are ii or sic with tmux.
